Grip — Kayak
Guard-Tex wraps paddle shafts for custom grip zones, diameter build-up, and indexing markers — then strips with zero residue on carbon, fiberglass, or aluminum shafts.
Most paddle shafts are uniform-diameter smooth tubes — carbon, fiberglass, or aluminum. No grip zones. No indexing. No way to feel hand position without looking. Your hands slide on the shaft during aggressive strokes, and in wet conditions — which is always — the smooth surface offers nothing.
Permanent grip wraps like paddle-specific shrink tubes add bulk to the entire shaft. Adhesive tapes leave residue that makes the shaft sticky and attracts dirt. Kayak-specific grip tape is expensive and limited to one diameter profile.
My carbon paddle shaft was like holding a wet pipe in surf conditions. Guard-Tex grip zones on both hands — completely different control in breaking waves.— Sea Kayaker, Surf Zone
Guard-Tex builds custom grip zones exactly where your hands go. Wrap the control hand for indexing. Build up the shaft-hand zone for comfortable diameter. Add drip-ring base layers. Cotton grips better wet than bare shaft. And it all strips clean — zero residue on any shaft material.
Custom Zones
Build grip zones only where your hands contact the shaft. The rest stays smooth for slide adjustments and ergonomic paddle technique.
Control hand grip. Wrap the control-hand zone for indexing — feel blade angle without looking. Cotton texture provides consistent grip for the hand that maintains feather orientation through the stroke cycle.
Shaft-hand build-up. Many paddlers prefer a slightly larger diameter at the shaft-hand position for comfort during long paddles. Layer Guard-Tex for custom diameter at the shaft-hand zone.
Wet grip zones. Wrap both hand positions for improved wet grip. Cotton gauze grips better wet than bare carbon, fiberglass, or aluminum — critical for ocean, surf, and whitewater paddling.
Drip ring positioning. Build a slight ridge of Guard-Tex as a base for drip ring positioning. The cotton creates a surface that holds drip rings in place better than smooth shaft material.
| Feature | Guard-Tex Wrap | Shrink-Wrap Grip | Adhesive Tape |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shaft residue | ✓ Zero — strips clean | Permanent modification | ✗ Adhesive residue |
| Custom zones | ✓ Wrap only where hands go | Full shaft coverage | Partial coverage |
| Wet grip | ✓ Cotton grips wet | Moderate | ✗ Many fail when wet |
| Indexing feel | ✓ Texture marks hand position | Adds diameter, no texture | Slight texture |
| Reversible | ✓ Strip and rebuild any time | ✗ Permanent | ✗ Residue cleanup |
Hold the paddle in paddling position. Mark where each hand grips the shaft — these are your wrap zones.
Pro tip: Offset-feathered paddlers should mark the control hand zone carefully — indexing is critical for blade angle.Spiral-wrap each hand zone with Guard-Tex. Two layers for grip texture alone, three for diameter increase.
Pro tip: Leave 6-8 inches between hand zones unwrapped for slide adjustments if your technique uses them. For the control hand, build a slight oval profile — thicker on one axis — so you can feel blade angle without looking. Two extra passes on one side creates indexing.
Pro tip: Oval indexing is standard on high-end paddles. Guard-Tex lets you add it to any shaft.Cotton grip is immediate — no curing. Paddle a session and assess. Rebuild zones wider, thicker, or in different positions as needed.
Pro tip: Many kayakers keep a grip build for months. Strip and rebuild at the start of each season.

Guard-Tex contains zero adhesive. It strips from carbon, fiberglass, and aluminum shafts with zero residue. The shaft underneath is factory-clean.
Wrap Guard-Tex at both hand positions on the shaft. Cotton provides wet grip and the wrap builds custom diameter. Add indexing on the control hand for blade angle feel.
Yes. Guard-Tex cotton grips better wet than bare carbon, fiberglass, or aluminum. The cohesive bond strengthens in water.
An oval-profile grip on the control hand that lets you feel blade angle without looking. Guard-Tex builds indexing by adding extra passes on one axis of the grip zone.
Yes. Layer Guard-Tex for custom thickness at each hand position. Build up thin shafts for large hands, or add minimal wrap for grip texture alone.
A Guard-Tex wrap on a paddle shaft typically lasts a full season. Replace when worn or when you want to experiment with a different grip profile.
