Protect — Roofers

Shingle Grit Eats Skin.
Hot Tar Burns Through Gloves.
Guard-Tex Handles Both.

Self-adhering tape that wraps your fingers with woven cotton — blocking shingle abrasion, hot tar splash, and metal drip edge cuts while giving you the grip and dexterity steep-slope work demands.

Roofing Is the Hardest Work Your Hands Will Ever Do.

Asphalt shingles are essentially sandpaper. Every bundle you carry, every shingle you place, every row you nail grinds ceramic granules into your fingertips. After a full day of tear-off and re-roof, your hands look like you dragged them across a belt sander. Add hot tar on commercial flat roofs — temperatures above 400°F that burn through standard work gloves — and metal drip edge that slices exposed skin, and roofing becomes the single most destructive trade for hands.

The slope problem makes it worse. On steep-slope residential work, you need your hands for balance and positioning. Thick gloves reduce your grip on sheathing and trusses. Many roofers work bare-handed on steep pitches because falling is a bigger risk than abrasion — and they're right. But that tradeoff destroys their hands over time.

I've been roofing for 18 years. My hands looked like raw hamburger every summer until my supply house guy gave me a roll of Guard-Tex. Game changer. My crew all uses it now.

Guard-Tex solves the tradeoff. It adds grip on steep surfaces (the cotton gauze texture is inherently high-friction) while blocking the abrasion that would otherwise grind through skin. Your hands stay protected without sacrificing the grip that keeps you on the roof.

Roofers using Guard-Tex self-adhering tape

Grip + Protection

Stay on the roof. Keep your skin.

Guard-Tex woven cotton actually increases grip on sheathing, asphalt, and metal surfaces compared to bare skin. It blocks shingle grit abrasion while maintaining the finger dexterity needed for nail gun positioning and flashing work.

Protection by Task — Tear-Off to Final Flash

Shingle handling and installation. Carrying bundles, breaking shingle packs, aligning courses, and hand-tabbing all grind ceramic granules into fingertips and palms. Guard-Tex on fingertips and thumb pads creates a cotton barrier that takes the abrasion instead of your skin. The woven texture also provides better shingle grip than bare skin for alignment and positioning.

Hot tar and built-up roofing. Commercial flat roofing involves hot asphalt at 400°F+ that burns through standard work gloves on contact. Guard-Tex alone won't stop a direct tar splash, but it provides a critical thermal buffer layer under hot-work gloves and protects exposed skin from radiant heat during kettle work and mopping.

Metal edge work. Drip edge, step flashing, valley metal, and ridge vent all have edges that slice. Roofers handle hundreds of metal pieces per roof. Guard-Tex on fingertips catches metal edges before they reach skin. Two passes provides cut resistance without affecting your ability to bend and position flashing.

Steep-slope grip. On 8:12 pitches and steeper, your hands are constantly on the sheathing for balance. Bare skin slides on dusty OSB. Gloves are too thick. Guard-Tex cotton gauze provides natural high-friction grip on wood, shingle, and metal surfaces — actually safer than bare hands on steep slopes.

Nail gun and tool work. Repetitive nail gun trigger pull causes index finger callusing and blister formation. Guard-Tex on the trigger finger cushions the impact point. It also dampens vibration from pneumatic tools that causes hand fatigue over full-day installs.

How to Tape for Roofers Work

1

Tape Before You Climb

Wrap fingertips, thumb pads, and knuckles with two overlapping passes each. For steep-slope work, add a pass across the palm for grip. Keep the wrap snug but flexible — full knuckle bend is essential for ladder climbing and roof navigation.

Pro tip: Pre-tear 8-10 strips on the ground and hang them on your tool belt. Easier than tearing tape on a 10:12 pitch.
2

Match Coverage to the Task

Tear-off and shingle carrying: focus on fingertips and palms. Flashing work: focus on fingertips only for maximum dexterity. Hot tar work: wrap under hot-work gloves as a thermal buffer. Nail gun work: wrap the trigger finger and thumb.

Pro tip: The first day on a new roof is the hardest on hands — fresh shingles have maximum grit. Tape heavier on day one.
3

Rewrap at Lunch

Roofing is the most abrasive trade. Even Guard-Tex wears through after 4-5 hours of continuous shingle handling. Rewrap at the lunch break for afternoon protection. One roll lasts about three full days of roofing.

Pro tip: In 100°F+ heat, the tape actually holds better because sweat activates the cohesive bond. Heat is not your enemy with this tape.
4

Peel Off at the Truck

Unwrap at end of shift. Zero residue, zero hair pulling, zero tar stuck to skin that wasn't exposed. Your hands underneath are protected, clean, and ready for tomorrow's roof.

Pro tip: If tar does contact the tape, peel off the tape and the tar comes with it — not off your skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do roofers use to protect their hands?

+

Experienced roofers increasingly use self-adhering finger tape like Guard-Tex for shingle handling, flashing work, and steep-slope tasks where full gloves reduce grip and dexterity. The tape provides targeted abrasion and cut protection on fingertips and knuckles without affecting the grip needed for safe roof work.

How do you prevent shingle abrasion on hands?

+

Wrap fingertips and thumb pads with two passes of Guard-Tex self-adhering tape before handling shingles. The woven cotton takes the ceramic granule abrasion instead of your skin. Rewrap at lunch on full-day installs — shingle work is the most abrasive construction task.

Does finger tape work on steep roofs?

+

Guard-Tex cotton gauze provides natural high-friction grip on wood sheathing, asphalt shingles, and metal surfaces. Many roofers report better grip with Guard-Tex than bare hands on dusty or steep surfaces. The tape stays on through sweat and heat — the cohesive bond strengthens in moisture.

Can you use finger tape under hot tar gloves?

+

Yes. Guard-Tex under hot-work gloves provides an additional thermal buffer and absorbs sweat that would otherwise cause hands to slide inside the glove. The cotton gauze wicks moisture away from skin.

How long does finger tape last on a roofing job?

+

One application typically lasts 4-5 hours of continuous shingle handling — the most abrasive construction task. Rewrap at lunch for full-day protection. For flashing and trim work, one application lasts a full shift. One roll of Guard-Tex covers approximately three full days of roofing.

Is finger tape OSHA-compliant for roofing?

+

OSHA requires appropriate hand protection for identified hazards. For tasks requiring dexterity where gloves impair grip and increase fall risk on steep slopes, finger tape provides targeted protection. Many safety programs approve self-adhering tape as part of a comprehensive hand protection plan.
