Changing Grips

After twenty years with a continental grip, James switched to semi-western for more topspin. His tennis improved. His hands revolted.

"Different grips create different friction patterns. My hands had adapted to one pattern for two decades. Now they had to start over."

The Adaptation Period

New blisters in new places. Old calluses irrelevant, new ones needed. James felt like a beginner again, at least in terms of hand conditioning.

He taped the new hot spots while his hands adapted. Gradually reduced tape as calluses formed in the right places. Three months later, his hands matched his new technique.

Worth the Change

The grip change added power and spin to James's game. The hand adaptation was temporary discomfort for permanent improvement. Smart protection made the transition manageable.
