The Hand Tool Revival

After twenty years of power tools, Sarah returned to hand tools. Chisels, planes, hand saws. The results were beautiful. Her hands, however, were not prepared.

"Power tools do the work for you. Hand tools transfer all the force through your hands. The blisters were immediate and aggressive."

The Adaptation

Sarah's hands had to rebuild calluses in entirely new places. The chisel grip, the plane push, the saw stroke — each created different friction patterns.

She taped while adapting. Thin wraps on the web of her thumb, her palm heel, the base of her fingers. Protection that allowed her to keep practicing while her hands caught up.

Now

Two years into the hand tool journey, Sarah's hands have fully adapted. She still tapes for marathon sessions — dovetailing an entire chest of drawers, for instance — but her baseline calluses handle normal work.
